Gauss Surgical (Los Altos, CA) won the European CE Mark to introduce its novel Triton app that measures blood loss during surgeries by taking pictures of extracted bloody sponges. The app runs on an iPad hanging off of one of the poles in the OR. Simply hold the sponge in front of the camera so it fits the green square and press a foot switch below to take a picture and it immediately calculates the blood within the sponge and adds it to the running total.
The app does interesting calculations to accurately estimate blood within the sponge depending on the coverage area and how it stretches when held up.
The Triton has been approved in the U.S. since last May and is already being regularly used in a variety of clinics.
