Varian Medical Systems‘ new ProBeam proton therapy system has received CE Mark approval in the EU. Proton therapy is a type of radiation therapy that delivers a radiation dose much more precisely to the designated treatment area compared to conventional X-ray radiation therapy, preventing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
The ProBeam system employs high-speed intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT), enabling modulation of the dose on a spot-by-spot, layer by layer basis throughout the treatment area. Irradiations from multiple angles are combined in an optimal manner to improve control of dose distributions. Scanning beam technology reduces the need for patient specific devices like collimators and compensators, reducing treatment time.
The proton therapy system consists of a cyclotron, an energy selection system, and treatment rooms in the form of either rotating gantry or fixed beam rooms. The beam is transported from the accelerator and the energy selection system to the treatment rooms via the beam transport system. The system can be configured from just one room up to a six room configuration.
