As is well known, light can be used to sterilize surfaces and even the air around us. Now a new product from UVLrx Therapeutics, a company based in Tampa, Florida, received European regulatory clearance to introduce its UVLrx 1500 light-based therapy system for cleaning blood of pathogens.
Unlike previous approaches, the UVLrx does not require blood to exit the body to enter some machine where it is irradiated with light. Instead, a 20-gauge x 1″ intravascular catheter is used to deliver the firm’s UVLrx Dry Light Adapter. The device uses LEDs to generate UVA and visible light at the same time in a fairly wide spectrum, treating blood as it naturally passes by the catheter. Since an existing IV site can be used to deliver the therapy, there is no need for gaining additional access.
