Medtronic received FDA clearance for its TYRX Neuro Absorbable Antibacterial Envelopes to be used with implantable neurostimulators. The first implants of Medtronic’s deep brain stimulators within the TYRX Absorbable Antibacterial Envelopes were conducted at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. The company is working on making the pouches available for use with neurostimulators used to address chronic pain, as well as those that help control bladder and bowel movements.
The envelope holds the implant in place while eluting minocycline and rifampin antibiotics for at least a week. Over the next eight weeks the envelope breaks down and is absorbed by the body.
