Having to use an ostomy bag is terrible business, so anything that can make the patient think less about the device is most welcome. 11 Health, a company based near London, England, is releasing a device that keeps tabs on how full the ostomy pouch is, letting patients go about their business without having to manually check on the bag’s status.
The Ostom-i Alert is a sensor that measures how full the bag in, keeping track of how much it fills up every time there’s discharge. It transmits readings to a paired smartphone app, letting the patient set the level at which it raises an alert. Caretakers can also be notified remotely if the pouch reaches a certain fill level.
The device may allow some patients to use a smaller bag while preventing any surprises that may occur.
