There are lots of options for smart thermometers on the market today. Caring Things, based in Columbus, Ohio, has added to the mix with Tympani. This infrared thermometer plugs into your smartphone’s audio jack to provide tympanic temperature measurements. An audio extension cable is included with the device and can be used when taking measurements that require a bit more flexibility. The company has developed an app (currently only available in Beta version) for Android and iOS that displays and tracks temperature measurements from the device.
Tympani works with a smartphone so, unlike other infrared thermometers, it requires no separate battery or display. This keeps the device compact enough to fit into the smallest of pockets. Like other infrared thermometers, Tympani takes just a few seconds to measure temperature. This is a distinct advantage over most other types of thermometers, especially when the patient is a crying baby.
Tympani is currently available for pre-order on Indiegogo for $25. It is estimated to ship in December of this year.
