Patients suffering from stroke or traumatic brain injury typically get scanned by CT and/or MRI after being admitted and then a few times during follow-ups. Those remaining in the hospital for observation are monitored primarily for side effects to detect potential cerebral bleeding or edema within the brain. Now Cerebrotech Medical Systems, a company out of Pleasanton, California, won European CE Mark approval for its non-invasive VIPS technology that uses radio waves to detect changes in the flow of intracranial fluids within the brain.
The real-time monitor consists of a headband that has multiple antennas within. These broadcast and receive each other’s signals, while a nearby computer analyzes these signals and provides a readout on a monitor of detected changes.
