At the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, researchers have developed a paper-based lateral flow assay for morphine testing. This technology, which is able to spot small target molecules, was designed to detect the use of a wide variety of drugs, as well as for applications in clinical diagnostics.
The investigators used Fab fragments, components antibodies that attach to antigens as sensing particles, coupled with gold nanoparticles that can be easily detected. The paper is shaped to create a matrix of capillaries through which the sample flows through, while an inkjet printer was used to lay down the Fab fragments.
In their laboratory testing, the researchers showed that the paper assay was able to detect morphine at concentrations down to 1ng/mL.
