McGinley Orthopaedic Innovations, a Casper, Wyoming company, won FDA clearance for its IntelliSense orthopedic surgical drill. The device simplifies the drilling process, automatically providing the surgeon information about the location of the drill bit relative to the bone it’s moving through. This can help to completely eliminate the need to manually gauge the depth of the drill hole.
The drill is capable of detecting when the bit is passing through the bony cortex of the distal layer, signaling to the surgeon when near the edge of a bone. This prevents over-penetration and helps prevent damage to the soft tissue beyond.
