Koning Corporation out of Rochester, NY landed FDA approval for its Koning Breast CT (KBCT) system, including the KBCT-guided biopsy bracket. The system is an alternative to mammography that uses cone beam CT technology to produce high resolution 3D visualization of breast tissue without compression. That last bit is a big advantage not only for women going through the procedure, but also for the technologists that have to apply pain daily to innocent victims for their own good.
The patient lies in a prone position, with the breast placed inside the imaging well. There isn’t any kind of suction used either, the breast simply maintaining its natural shape. Just for safety though, there is a transparent film separating the breast from the machinery below though.
The system can also be used for guided biopsy procedures, offering high precision 3D needle navigation thanks to the biopsy bracket.
