Old age and disease can make it difficult to use upper extremities, often leaving people who can’t use dining utensils to rely on others to feed them. Luis Garcia, a mechanical engineer in Mexico, has developed a new device that can automatically feed someone without relying on a human assistant. The HelloSpoon, “an Adorable Mealtime Assistant” as it’s described by its designer, is positioned on the dining table and comes along with a special tilted bowl. An accompanying mat helps position the device and bowl for the mechanical spoon to accurately scoop the food up and deliver it to the mouth.
Luis Garcia is now raising money on Indiegogo to help finalize the device and manufacture the first batch of the feeding robots. Here’s a video presentation of the HelloSpoon:
