Intellijoint Surgical (Waterloo, ON) won FDA clearance for its Intellijoint HIP system that’s used to help orthopedic surgeons measure leg length and hip offset during hip replacements. The system consists of two disposable sensors and a display computer that provides the readings.
One of the sensors is placed on the pelvis while the other goes on the patient’s femur or acetabular cup instruments. The system then provides real-time feedback of the leg length and offset. The system uses optics to measure the distance between the sensors and works with any surgical approach or implant. The company hopes that providing accurate real-time measurements during implantation will lead to improved outcomes, requiring fewer corrective procedures and overall improved comfort for patients.
