The FDA has given Philosys, a Korean medical device company, regulatory clearance to offer its Gmate SMART glucometer to U.S. diabetics. The device is about the size of a small USB stick and plugs into the headphone jack on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. The Gmate SMART app communicates with the meter, pulling down readings and making them available for historic review.
There’s no adapter, and pairing, such as with Bluetooth, is not necessary. To get started, you simply launch the app, plug in the Gmate SMART, insert a test strip into it, and it’s ready to accept a blood sample. Readings pop up on the screen and saved for the future. To help make more sense of the glucose levels, the user can make notes and categorize individual readings as having been taken after a meal, before one, during exercise, etc.
The readings can be shared easily with one’s physician or caretakers by emailing or texting them straight from the Gmate SMART app.
