Withings has received FDA clearance of its updated blood pressure monitor and is starting its sale immediately. The monitor, recently announced at CES, improves upon the previous version by making it completely wireless and adding Android compatibility. Whereas the old version used the old proprietary Apple 30-pin connector (and thus needed a lightning adapter to work on newer devices), the new version uses Bluetooth 4.0 to communicate with any iOS or Android-based device.
The design of the device itself has virtually stayed the same. It is wrapped around the arm, and when turned on automatically connects with the smartphone and opens the accompanying Withings Health Mate app, which also aggregates data from Withings’ other wireless health devices. A button within the app starts the actual blood pressure and heart rate measurement. The app saves results and can be used to show trends over time and to compare results to population standards. It can also be used to set reminders to take regular measurements and send readings to a physician or anyone else.
The device has received both FDA approval and CE mark and is sold through the Withings Web Store for 129.95 dollars/euros.
