Delphinus Medical Technologies out of Plymouth, MI received FDA clearance for its SoftVue whole-breast ultrasound imaging system to be used for breast cancer diagnostics. The SoftVue is based around a wide-spectrum ultrasound that’s built into the system’s table. The patient lies prone on the table, positioning the breast inside a warm water tank that transmits ultrasound waves between the ring transducer and the breast tissue.
Because the system doesn’t use ionizing radiation like in traditional mammography, the risk of developing cancer from the exam itself is effectively reduced to zero. The test takes about two minutes per breast and requires no uncomfortable compressions, nor much training for the personnel that are assigned to operate the SoftVue.
