Philips Respironics has launched the world’s first gel pillows mask called Nuance to help patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea get a better night’s sleep while benefiting from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. The Nuance masks have a gel padded frame and a non-slip head gear to prevent displacement in the middle of the night.
The gel frame can be replaced by a fabric frame for those who prefer the feel of that material. Both the gel frame and the fabric frame options come with lightweight tubing that is connected to the patient’s CPAP systems. Prior to use of the headgear and connecting the required tubing, the patient has to first place the appropriate size gel pillows cushion tips, which are provided as accessories with the Nuance mask, over his or her nostril. The unique design of gel pillows provides a tight seal around the nostrils. The headgear is then worn over the gel cushion tips.
In a survey conducted by Philips, patients who used the Nuance masks with the gel pillows claimed that the gel pillows caused less nostril irritation and less facial red marks than competing pillows masks. Patients also stated that the Nuance system was easier to put together and take apart than other industry leading pillows masks.
