Drunk driving is always a bad idea, but being able to evaluate whether you are truly sober and under the legal blood alcohol limit for driving isn’t always easy. Your rationality is affected by alcohol and the senses may be unreliable, so a portable breathalyzer may help take the guessing out of getting behind the wheel. The Alcohoot, a device we wrote about earlier this year as it was being finalized, is now available for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.
Costing $119, the Alcohoot plugs into the audio port of a compatible device running the complementary app. Once attached, the user blows into the sensor port and estimated blood alcohol readings are displayed on the tablet or phone. The device is available in three colors (red, white, black), is about the size of a box of matches, and so is small enough to keep handy in the car for those times when you may have forgotten about downing that extra pint.
