Fitbit, the maker of wearable activity monitors, has released the latest version in its wrist monitor line of products. The Fitbit Force is a development on the previous version, Fitbit Flex, and now includes an OLED screen. Unlike the Fitbit Flex, on the Fitbit Force users can look at the calories burned, distance traveled and quality of sleep on the OLED display with a press of a button. In the previous version of the wrist monitor, users could look at their activity stats only on their PC, Mac, iPhone or Android apps, and not on the wrist monitor itself. The Fitbit Force also has an altimeter, enabling the user to track the number of floors climbed in a day, which was not available on the previous model. As with all versions of the Fitbit, the device automatically syncs with a PC or a Mac, making all the fitness monitoring stats available on one’s computer.
The OLED display also shows the time of day and when paired with an iOS 7 device can also display incoming call information, making it a type of “smart” watch. Pressing the side button for an extended period starts a stopwatch, a new option on the Force version. The Force, like the Flex, continues to have sleep monitoring ability and also has a silent alarm to wake the user through vibrations. The device has sufficient water resistance to withstand sweat, but cannot be used during sustained exposures to water such during showers or for swimming. Fitbit Force sells for $129.95, while the previous version, Fitbit Flex, now sells for $99.
