Cardiovascular Systems, Inc.(St. Paul, MN) received FDA approval for the Diamondback 360 Coronary Orbital Atherectomy System to clear severely calcified coronary arteries prior to stent delivery.
Using an electrically driven 1.25 mm diamond-coated crown that provides a combination of differential sanding and centrifugal force, the Diamondback 360 Coronary Orbital Atherectomy System reduces calcified lesions in coronary blood vessels. The centrifugal force created due to the rotating diamond coated crown causes the crown to scrape against the lesion resulting in its erosion. The differential sanding process results in dislodging of minuscule particles that do not require filtration by an embolic protection device to prevent strokes. Thermal injury to the blood vessels is minimized due to the continuous flow of blood during the atherectomy procedure. Reducing the calcified plaque size using the Diamondback 360 Coronary Orbital Atherectomy System will hopefully allow for optimal stent delivery and deployment leading to improved treatment outcomes and reduced hospital readmission rates.
