Terumo will soon be releasing the new Glidesheath Slender sheath that accepts 6 Fr instruments, but has the outer diameter of a conventional 5 Fr sheath thanks to newly developed thin wall construction. Not only will this help with patient comfort and procedure outcome, but it allows physicians to deliver diagnostic and interventional devices, which tend to be larger, through the same vascular channel. In particular, because of their traditionally narrower vasculature, women will particularly benefit from this new device.
The company also claims that thanks to its thin-wall technology, the Glidesheath Slender offers less penetration resistance at the puncture site than conventional sheaths. Terumo plans to introduce the device in October at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) conference in San Francisco.
