LabStyle Innovations has received CE Mark for its Dario smartphone-based glucose monitor and diabetes management system, and the company is planning an initial soft launch of the system in Europe in the coming months. Dario is a compact all-in-one device containing a lancet, a strip dispenser and an adapter to hold the test strip and interface with a smartphone. The adapter plugs into the smartphone’s audio jack, and works along with a free app and internet-based data services.
The Dario app, a key component of the all-in-one system, has been approved by Apple and will be available in the app store in the near future. Within the app users can enter information about food intake, exercise and physical activity, and use a proprietary insulin calculator to determine the correct dose to take. Alerts are provided for abnormally high or low glucose levels, while logs, charts and graphs provide an overview of the collected data. That data is also saved in the cloud and synced across the application and web portal. Besides reminders there is also a social aspect to encourage testing, with virtual rewards and online competitions as part of the accompanying online community.
After the European launch, Labstyle Innovations plans to pursue FDA approval for the device as well.
The company has made a video that presents the device in an interesting and slightly unusual way for a medical device:
