As laboratory-based techniques for genetic manipulation of animals continue to evolve, new methods are being developed that help scientists assess their effectiveness. A collaboration between researchers at University of Hawai`i at Mānoa and University of Istanbul and Marmara University in Turkey, has created new transgenic glowing rabbits to demonstrate that a new technique for introducing genes into animals works as designed. This technique relies on removing embryos from the mother, injecting bits of jellyfish DNA that code for green fluorescent protein (GFP) into them, and placing them back into the mother’s womb.
