Re-Mission 2, a set of video games designed by a nonprofit org called HopeLab for kids living with cancer, has been available on PCs and through an online browser, but now Re-Mission 2: Nanobot’s Revenge is natively supported on Apple iOS and Android devices.
The game involves the player acting as a “nanobot” that finds tumors, prevents them from spreading to other parts of the body, and attacks them with all kinds of firepower to kill the cancer. Cigna, the large insurance company, has sponsored this rollout and the hope is that more hospitals working with children who have cancer will offer the free game to help with anxiety and maybe actually help fight the real cancers.
From the announcement:
The new games apply insights from a brain-imaging study published in 2012 by HopeLab and Stanford University researchers showing that Re-Mission, a video game about killing cancer in the body, strongly activates brain circuits involved in positive motivation. This reward-related activation is associated with a shift in attitudes and emotions that helped boost players’ adherence to prescribed chemotherapy and antibiotic treatments in a previous study. As a result, each Re-Mission 2 game is designed to boost positive emotion, increase self-efficacy, and shift attitudes toward chemotherapy
