Dell has been working with Prentke Romich Company (PRC), a maker of assistive devices, to create a Windows 8-based tablet to help people with autism communicate, get work done, and have fun. The Accent 1000 features Unity software that allows the user to compose thoughts and have them read out by the computer.
The tablet is based on the Dell Latitude 10, but Windows 8 is setup so that the user has a unique, very focused experience without seeing any of the underlying applications. Nevertheless, the device can be remotely updated as new software comes out. It’s available in a variety of colors and can be customized with a number of access options to accommodate different disabilities.
Some of the features of Accent 1000 from its product page:
- Pre-loaded with Unity®, PRC’s powerful language system, allowing users to generate spontaneous and specific messages
- Also available with Essense™ , the language system for literate adults
- Dedicated device with synthesized voices and multiple selection. Conforms to Medicare and Medicaid guidelines and qualifies for funding under E2510
- Device locked from Windows® applications but allows for Wi-Fi connectivity for PRC software updates and remote services even in the dedicated configuration
- Multiple access options, direct selection, 1- and 2-switch scanning access
- Context-Sensitive Help built right into the device for fast answers that are easy to access
