ApiFix of Misgav, Israel received European regulatory approval to market its ratcheting spinal correction implant. Designed for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, the device consists of a ratchet that spans between two screws implanted into the spine. Some time after surgery, the patient stretches until the ratchet clicks a step, forcing in place the new minimum angle. Once soft tissue has adjusted, the patient proceeds to the next step, and so on gradually through the whole regimen. From the announcement:
Recently, ApiFix successfully completed a pilot clinical trial in Europe, during which implants were executed in patients suffering from AIS. “The results demonstrate the implant’s safety and success in correcting the curvature,” noted Uri Arnin, ApiFix CEO and an entrepreneur with vast experience in the spinal implants field. “Within about three months, we achieved an impressive result, while maintaining spinal flexibility.”
