InTouch Health has announced that its RP-VITA (Remote Presence Virtual + Independent Telemedicine Assistant) Remote Presence Robot has been cleared by the FDA to offer long-distance doctor/patient consults to clinics in the U.S.
Developed with a team from iRobot, the telemedicine system is smart enough to navigate a clinical facility on its own, so that the remote physician needs only enter a room number and sit back and watch it go. This way remote physicians can virtually work in multiple clinics without having to know the layout of each one. Moreover, because the RP-VITA uses an iPad as the interface, getting clinical staff comfortable with using it should be a snap.
From the announcement:
The FDA clearance specifically allows RP-VITA to be used for active patient monitoring in pre-operative, peri-operative and post-surgical settings, including cardiovascular, neurological, prenatal, psychological and critical care assessments and examinations.
RP-VITA merges seamlessly with existing hospital processes to provide state-of-the-art audiovisual capabilities with a high-quality interactive experience. Furthermore, the RP-VITA platform was designed with a full range of clinical capabilities for delivering services like TeleStroke and TeleICU today that can be expanded to integrate patient data and enable other important clinical functions in the future. Enhancing efficiency through ease of use and care coordination, RP-VITA sets a new standard of performance for delivering acute care remotely.
