Supplements are a huge industry, but because they’re not regulated by the FDA many companies can get away with making outrageous claims about the benefits of their products. Don’t believe us? Just check your email’s spam folder and you’ll likely find advertisements for miracle pills with “expert” testimonials and “scientific” data. These supplements could not only be a waste of money for consumers, but could possibly even be hazardous to your health.
LabDoor, a San Francisco based startup, aims to help protect consumers from dubious claims with its new iOS and web app that launched as public beta last week. LabDoor strives to be your trusted source for lab-tested product ratings for vitamins, energy drinks, and other supplements. They contract and crowd source data from numerous independent testing labs (and are never paid by manufacturers) and run everything through a proprietary algorithm that gives you a rating from A to F with additional details on efficacy, safety, and the actual contents of the supplement based on reverse-engineering. For example, a can of Red Bull (a medical blogger’s favorite), received a B rating.
You can sign up for LabDoor now on their website or download their iOS application which gives you all their data at your fingertips, as well as a barcode scanner to use while you’re roaming the aisles of your local health food store.
