Medication non-adherence is a big problem in the United States. In addition to the health effects that come from not following a prescribed medication plan, non-adherence leads to over $300 billion in wasteful spending each year.
Earlier this month at CES, we got to meet the team at Abiogenix, a health start-up out of Boston, Massachusetts. They hope to fix this expensive and dangerous non-adherence problem with their new product, the uBox. The uBox is a smart pillbox that securely stores and dispenses medication at the proper time and syncs via Bluetooth to a smartphone. When it’s time to take medication (the times are programmed beforehand on your smartphone), uBox beeps, lights up, notifies your smartphone and unlocks a single dose from one of its 14 compartments. uBox doesn’t only remind you to take your medication; it records when you dispense a dose by sending a notification back to your phone. If you happen to be stubborn or forgetful, you can also get others involved, such as a loved one or doctor. These individuals, termed by Abiogenix as your “care circles”, can also receive notifications when and if you’ve taken your medication.
Here’s a video about uBox from Abiogenix founders Sara Cinnamon and Goutam “Greddy” Reddy:
Right now, uBox has an Indiegogo campaign running, so head over to their page if you want to support them and pre-order a uBox for yourself.
