State health authorities in Texas are now using software developed at University of Texas at Austin to prepare for a possible flu pandemic of the future. The Texas Pandemic Flu Toolkit allows simulations to be performed based on various characteristics of the disease including the latency period, infectious period, and the mortality rate. By performing simulations based on probable scenarios, the folks in Texas think they can better respond in cases of emergency and be able to effectively simulate the progression of a real pandemic.
