Those of us with normal hearing often like to discuss our tastes in music, argue about artists, and their latest albums. We rarely think of how complicated even basic music pieces are and what it takes for our ears and brains to really listen. Dr. Charles Limb of Johns Hopkins works to bring hearing to the deaf, something that can be done successfully in a large number of patients, but music turns out to be a more difficult affair. Here’s his talk from this year’s TEDMED describing the challenges and how we must move forward to introduce the beauty of music to more people.
