PositiveID Corporation out of Delray Beach, Florida won clearance from the FDA for its wireless iglucose diabetes management system. The device is essentially a black box (with a couple lights) that has a USB port outside and a cellular chip inside. Plugging in a compatible glucometer (LifeScan OneTouch and Nipro Diagnostic True are listed in the press release) automatically triggers the technology to collect blood glucose readings and to send them over a mobile phone network to an online portal for clinicians and caretakers to review. The device is independent, not requiring a computer to operate, and the built-in cellular capabilities are not dependent on having to sign up for a phone plan.
Once the data is uploaded, charts and reports can be easily generated for a comprehensive analysis of glucose levels over time.
