In more news from Touch Bionics, the company has introduced the Virtu-Limb, a product that lets you use one of their bionic hands as if you were wearing it. The Virtu-Limb consist of a yellow dome that acts kind of like a docking station for the i-Limb prostheses which is connected to a strap around a person’s arm that detects the myoelectric signals that are normally used by the electrodes in the base of the prosthesis.
It can either be used to move a real prosthetic hand directly connected to the device, or, if you do not have one on hand, a simulated one on the screen of a computer connected via Bluetooth. The Virtu-Limb can be practical for a variety of purposes: measuring patients’ myoelectric signals to determine the best muscle sites for their prosthesis, for patient training purposes and of course to demonstrate the awesomeness of the i-Limb to potential customers patients. The device was presented along with the new i-Limb Ultra at the American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association National Assembly.
