Telcare has received FDA clearance for its Telcare BGM 3G blood glucose meter. The BGM acts like a normal glucose meter but embeds cellular connectivity that sends blood glucose data to Telcare’s servers. It uses inexpensive broadband spectrum to transmit data economically and instantaneously without requiring cellular voice and data contracts for operation. It creates an immediate two-way feedback loop between patient and caregiver (including doctors, diabetes nurse educators, and family members), facilitating a continuous care model.
Doctors can look up the submitted data and the device can also send data directly to electronic health records (EHRs). Telcare is also developing a suite of smartphone apps for caregivers such as parents of diabetic children and relatives of diabetic elderly. Telcare plans to offer its blood glucose meter at the same pricepoint as regular blood glucose meters. Below is a video of Qualcomm (who provide the wireless chipset) CEO Paul E.
