David Chavez, a product designer based in San Fransisco, has come up with a really neat concept design for a braille watch called Haptica. Though the product has not been fully developed yet, the concept design has been kicking around for a little while. The watch is read by sliding a finger through a slot on it’s face, at the base of which are braille dots which represent the time.
According to the video (see below), a number of braille watches currently exist. However, these can be slow or difficult to read without attracting attention. Haptica aims to overcome these limitations by making it easy and quick to read with a single finger swipe. The Haptica design has already won several awards and is currently in the early stage of fund raising and engineering. The implementation for the braille time-face presents a substantial engineering challenge and it will be interesting to see how this will be implemented.
