Traditional tourniquets, because of their ease of use and immediate benefit, have been life savers for countless soldiers injured in battle. Yet, there are large areas of the body where a tourniquet is simply not useful, like the neck, groin, and abdomen.
To address serious injuries to the pelvic and groin area, Combat Medical Systems of Fayetteville, N.C. recently started supplying the U.S. military with its Combat Ready Clamp (CRoC), which has already begun to be fielded to medics in Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Army Medical Department Journal, using a device like the CRoC to stop the bleeding may save the lives of up to three soldiers a month.
