Animated Anatomies was an exhibition of anatomical flap and pop-up books that was recently held at Duke University. The books were used for anatomy education as far back as the 16th century. Early books have simple flaps which could be “dissected” to show the underlying anatomy, while some later nineteenth century books feature complex 3D foldouts. Unfortunately, the exhibition is already over, but it is well worth visiting its website and viewing the available images and videos. Here is a video giving you a taste of what you have missed:
