Spacelabs Healthcare (named so because it originally developed telemetry devices to monitor the vital signs of orbiting astronauts) has recently launched XPREZZON, a patient monitor that pretty much fullfills all the wishes we ever had for a monitor and that also makes some clever use of existing remote desktop technology. It has a sleek, frameless, iPad-like high resolution touchscreen display. It can display custom trends which can be accessed with a single touch, or they can be displayed continuously and arranged to the user’s liking. It has bright LED alarm lights both on the front and the back. For those accustomed to dual-screen desktop set-ups, a second display can be attached to the monitor, acting as a secondary screen for charting and other clinical applications. Under the hood the XPREZZON makes use of an embedded Citrix thin-client, able to connect to any Citrix server already running in the hospital. Spacelabs also hasn’t forgotten about the patients: the monitor has an ambient light sensor that dims its display in low light.
In addition, Spacelabs has also just released an iPad app called ICS Xprezz, that basically gives you a mobile clone of the Xprezzon monitor that can be used anywhere were you have mobile access. The app can connect to the Xprezzon as well as the UltraviewSL family of patient monitors. Patient data is streamed to the app, but is never processed or saved on the iPad. The app is powered by iTap Mobile, one of the most popular remote desktop apps for iPad, and can indeed also connect to any Windows-based PC for remote access. The app can be downloaded for free and includes a demo of a real-life system.
