CerebralRx out of Yehud, Israel has announced the European launch of its FitNeS vagus nerve stimulation system. It is used to treat epilepsy with partial onset seizures which cannot be effectively controlled via pharmacological treatment. The device consists of an implanted stimulator and stimulation lead, which is connected to the left vagus nerve. Compared to other vagus nerve stimulation devices, the FitNeS system uses lower currents, minimizes nerve damage through a unique nerve electrode interface, reduces current leakage through improved cuff isolation and allows for safe and easy explant of the electrode.
The technology behind the system is based on the CardioFit by BioControl Medical for treating congestive heart failure. CerebralRx is a spinoff of BioControl Medical that plans to use the technology for a range of neurological disorders. The first two successful implantations of the new system have already been performed at the Institute for Clinical Neurosciences at the Shalgrenska Academy in Götenberg, Sweden.
