Just recently we reported about a one millimeter diameter camera from Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration in Berlin. Now Medigus (Omer, Israel) is presenting us a camera that is just a tad bit smaller, measuring 0.99 mm in diameter. The company claims it is actually the world’s smallest video camera available, a miniaturized version of their last 1.2mm model. More importantly, this camera is actually production ready, Medigus is shipping sample units to companies which produce cardiology-related devices in the next few weeks. The camera is purposed for endoscopes and is used together with an external video processor. It features a 0.66×0.66 mm CMOS sensor with an image resolution of 45,000 pixels. Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology, a method of building three-dimensional integrated circuits, is used, enabling miniaturization and reduction of mass-production costs. The cost for the camera in mass-production will actually be low enough to be used in disposable devices. We are very interested to see future applications of this tiny device.
