Olympus has received FDA clearance for its ScopeGuide, a technology that assists colonoscopists during a colonoscopy by visualizing the colonoscope as it travels through the colon. It provides a real-time 3D image of the shape and configuration of the colonoscope inside the body. The system uses magnetic endoscopic imaging to locate and image the scope. The colonoscope contains electromagnetic transmission coils which generate a weak magnetic field, which is received by the ScopeGuide receiver. A separate handheld 3D marker can help visualizing where abdominal pressure will be most effective. The ScopeGuide should enable early detection of loop formations and can assist with scope insertion.
Commercial launch is planned for later this summer.
On the product page an animation can be found of the system in action.
