The Redsense device is a blood sensor intended to monitor for blood loss from hemodialysis access sites during treatment. It detects blood leakage from the needle puncture site via an infrared light and will alarm if needle dislodgement or blood leakage is detected. While the device has been FDA approved since 2007, Redsense has just received approval for up to eight hours of use. And this is where usage of the device starts to make sense. During normal dialysis the patient or supervising staff will usually be quickly aware when a leakage occurs. However, during nocturnal hemodialysis, leakage can stay unnoticed for prolonged periods. With the device, leakage of only a few millimeters of blood can be detected and appropriate measures can be taken.
