When you were a kid, you were probably terrified of getting your vaccine shots at the pediatrician’s office.
Perhaps now there’s progress — but also more things to be concerned about. The Chinese SFDA (State Food and Drug Administration) has approved Medical International Technology‘s Med-Jet needle-free injection system. This gun uses compressed air for injection delivery and is meant for mass vaccination, psychiatry, dermatology and mesotherapy. Devices can perform an impressive 3000 injections per hour (that is 50 injections per minute!). Injections can be either intradermal, subcutaneous or intramuscular with a volume of 0.01 to 1cc, and the system is said to last over 10 years.
We can imagine this gun-shaped device to be even scarier than needles to children and psychiatric patients, but when it comes to speed of mass vaccination, there does not seem to be any other device that comes even close. And that’s where it gets scary — what circumstances would require the use of this device? Bioterror attacks? Army deployments? Suddenly the pediatrician’s office doesn’t seem so scary.
