It is quite unfortunate that in the modern cath lab, clinicians are constantly exposed to unneeded radiation. Can’t all the navigation and manipulation of remote objects in a complex vasculature be done via a robotic interface so as to move clinicians away from the X-ray tube and maybe even improve their ability and precision? Well, the FDA has just given clearance to Corindus (Natick, MA), a vascular robotics company, to perform a clinical trial to test the safety and effectiveness of its CorPath 200 System.
Features of the CorPath 200 from the product page:
Precise, robotic-assisted control allows placement of guidewire and catheter and stable device deployment Fixates and holds devices at all times, so the physician can control contrast injection while manipulating the guidewire Open architecture system allows users to select their own preferred guidewire and balloon/stent devices Improves visualization of angiography through close proximity of monitors Measurement capability within seconds Reduces fatigue enabling better concentration and focus for longer periods of time Comfortable seating position minimizes head, neck, and back pain due standing while wearing a lead apron Interventional lead-lined cockpit offers a reduced radiation zone for the physician to perform the procedure Improved control of contrast injection and visualization of angiography could potentially reduce the volume of contrast media and radiation dose for the patient
