Open repair of a thoracic aortic aneurysm can be a huge undertaking requiring cardiopulmonary bypass, with all its associated risks and costs, and sometimes even complete circulatory arrest. Fortunately, in certain cases, depending on the location of the aortic defect, there is an alternative – endovascular repair through the femoral artery. Medtronic has once again pushed the envelope in performing this less-invasive procedure by receiving approval for the Captivia delivery system to be used with its Talent Thoracic Stent Graft.
During thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), the system is introduced via a femoral artery and guided to the aorta, then the Captivia system is used to precisely guide and deploy the stent to the aneurysm without occluding the blood flow into nearby arteries.
