Given Imaging has received FDA approval for the PillCam Express, a device to help people, that otherwise have swallowing difficulties, to take down the capsule video camera. The PillCam express uses a catheter based system to deliver the device via an endoscope and a balloon placement mechanism to prevent any scratches to the video camera lens.
Additionally, Given Imaging has released the PillCam SB 2-EX, a capsule capable of recording at least 12 hours of the insides of intestines for patients with slower peristalsis.
More about the PillCam Express:
The catheter of PillCam Express is passed through the working channel of the endoscope (minimum working channel diameter of 2.8mm) and the capsule holder is attached to the distal end of the catheter. The PillCam SB video capsule is inserted into the capsule holder and the endoscope placed into the desired location in the patient’s GI tract. The air-filled syringe is then attached to the proximal end of the catheter and it is depressed to force air into the catheter. The capsule will be gently released into the desired location. The endoscope is then withdrawn and scissors are used to remove the capsule holder. Finally, the catheter is withdrawn from the working channel of the endoscope.
Clear design enables visualization of capsule deployment through the endoscope Single-use, quick-locking mechanism that safely secures the capsule holder to the catheter Proprietary balloon deployment mechanism specifically designed to work with the current generation of PillCam SB 2 video capsules, ensuring that the capsule will not be scratched or damaged Smooth catheter design to ensure no damage to the working channel of the endoscope
