DGIMED ORTHO (Minnetonka, MN) has received FDA approval of its Distalock titanium femoral intramedullary nail system. Locking screws are used to stabilize the intramedullary rod that is used to treat femur fractures. The system uses a drill that burrs an initial hole for the distal locking screws from inside of the bone. This hole is then further drilled from the outside using a chaseback pin, allowing for faster and more accurate placement of the screws than conventional placement. The company also plans to adapt the nail and drill system for use with tibia fractures.
