South Korea recently has established a gaming curfew that further blurs the line whether playing video games is a harmless activity, a potentially dangerous addictive behavior or the best way to become a great surgeon. The new policy will have a 6 hour blackout period either starting at midnight, 1am, or 2am. Also, the user’s data speeds will be significantly reduced if they are online for an extended period of time.
Various incidents in South Korea have made video game addiction/overuse a hot button issue. Seeing the effects these kinds of policies have on the health of the country’s youth will be enlightening as we continue to study the many questions regarding heavy video game usage.
Currently video games aren’t classified as addictive, however it may classified as such in the DSM V which will be released in September 2012.
