Crospon of Galway, Ireland, having recently received FDA clearance, is now bringing to the US market its EndoFLIP (Endolumenal Functional Lumen Imaging Probe). The device uses a balloon probe that can inflate to measure how far hollow organs are able to expand. Some of the uses of the EndoFLIP include identifying candidates for GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) surgery, setting gastric band stoma size during bariatric surgery, and analysis of the state of anorectal disorders.
From the product page:
The system consists of a probe, or balloon catheter that is attached to a data recorder with a screen. The probe contains a series of sixteen electrodes that when filled with a conductive fluid, can measure the cross-sectional areas (CSAs) and at different points along the balloon. The probe can be deployed either transnasally or transorally. The CSAs can be translated to estimated diameters and the changing geometry of the gastroesophageal junction can be shown dynamically and in real-time on the screen
