Cloud Computing for Radiotherapy

RadiotherapyGrid is a solution based on Grid technology that helps hospitals plan radiotherapy for individual patients. The treatment plan – the direction, size and length of dosages – has to be carefully calculated to avoid damaging healthy tissue. These calculations can take a long time, but by having the computer grid providing computing resources this progress can be sped up significantly. In addition, it eliminates the need for hospital to invest in expensive hardware needed for the calculations. The grid has two core functions: verification of plans using accurate, but computationally expensive, techniques and searching for the optimal treatments. The system was developed by BEinGRID, a project funded by the European Commission.
