Applisonix of Rehovot, Israel has applied to the FDA to market the company’s Selectif ultrasound depilatory device in the US. Applisonix claims that the Selectif device is the first product in the world to use ultrasound energy for hair removal. The device, which targets the professional market, can remove hair from small and sensitive parts of the body irrespective of hair or skin color. The treatment is painless, has no side effects, and there are no restrictions regarding sun exposure.
From the product page:
The IMPRESA™ technology utilizes the hair and the skin characteristics to make the hair serve as an accurate and efficient ultrasonic waveguide. An ultrasonic head is used to focus the acoustic energy directly into the hair shaft, channeling ultrasound energy precisely to the hair root, where the energy is converted into heat. As a result, the hair root`s temperature rapidly exceeds the level that is required to cause long-term damage to the hair’s re-growth mechanisms. Since the energy is accurately applied through the hair shaft, the surrounding skin is not affected.
